Opening a bank account in Cyprus is one of the most time-consuming steps in the relocation process. What takes fifteen minutes online in Germany takes two to six weeks in Cyprus and requires an in-person appointment with extensive documentation. The reason: strict KYC (Know Your Customer) rules following the 2013 banking crisis.
The two main banks
Bank of Cyprus and Hellenic Bank are the only relevant commercial banks in Cyprus; Greece's Alpha Bank and the Romanian RCB Bank play a minor role. Both main banks offer online banking with an English interface, SEPA transfers (free within the eurozone), debit and credit cards (Visa, Mastercard), and call and fixed-deposit accounts. Account maintenance fees are around EUR 3–10/month for personal accounts and EUR 15–30/month for business accounts. IBAN format: CY + 2 check digits + 8-digit bank code + 16-digit account number.
Documents required – personal account
Valid passport, Yellow Slip (MEU1), tax number (TIC) – mandatory, proof of income (employment contract, bank statements for the last three months, tax assessment), proof of address (rental agreement or a utility bill), and a source-of-funds declaration – the bank asks where your money comes from. Typical answers: company profits, salary, savings, inheritance. Have supporting evidence ready.
Documents required – business account
Everything from the personal account plus: Certificate of Incorporation, Memorandum and Articles of Association, Certificate of Directors and Secretary, Certificate of Shareholders, a board resolution to open the account, a business plan or description of activities, and identification of all ultimate beneficial owners with passport copies and proof of address. For more complex structures (holding, several shareholders) the bank may request additional documents – CMC prepares the complete set.
The KYC process
After the in-person appointment (around 60–90 minutes), the internal compliance review begins. The bank checks the identity of everyone involved (shareholders, directors, beneficiaries), the source of funds, the business model and expected transaction volume, sanctions lists and PEP status (politically exposed persons), and, where applicable, references from existing banks. The review takes two to six weeks; in rare cases (complex structures, high-risk countries) longer. CMC speeds up the process through complete, error-free documentation and direct contact with the compliance departments.
Revolut and Wise as a bridge
Until the Cyprus account is active, CMC recommends a Revolut Business or Wise Business account as an interim solution. Both offer instant online account opening, an IBAN (Lithuanian or Belgian respectively), SEPA transfers and multi-currency accounts. This lets you invoice and receive payments from day one. Important: Revolut/Wise is not a substitute for a Cyprus bank account – salary payments, social insurance and local business activity require an account with Bank of Cyprus or Hellenic Bank.
Common reasons for rejection
Banks decline account openings for missing or incomplete documentation (the most common reason), an unclear source of funds, business models in high-risk sectors (cryptocurrencies, online gambling, certain financial services), links to sanctioned countries, and PEP status without sufficient explanation. CMC knows the banks' requirements precisely and prepares clients accordingly – the rejection rate among CMC clients is close to zero.
Costs and fees
Opening the account itself is free. Ongoing fees: personal account EUR 3–10/month, business account EUR 15–30/month, SEPA transfers within the eurozone free, international transfers EUR 10–25 per transaction, debit card free, credit card EUR 30–60/year. Online banking is available in English at both banks, and Bank of Cyprus offers a mobile app with real-time notifications. In short, a Cyprus bank account is essential for payroll, social insurance contributions and local business activity. One point is often overlooked: after opening the account, the company must register the IBAN with the social insurance authority – otherwise no salaries can be processed – and the tax authority also needs the account for refunds. CMC registers the account details with all relevant authorities. CMC has opened accounts with Bank of Cyprus and Hellenic Bank for more than eight hundred clients and knows the compliance departments' requirements in detail.
Opening a Bank Account in Cyprus: The Account Earned Through the Diligence, Not Assumed
Opening a Cyprus bank account is earned through the bank's diligence—KYC, substance, documentation—not assumed as a formality following formation — the system briefing first: The account requires diligence (the bank account opening of the diligence sort — the KYC and substance of the required kinds: the account as the diligenced application; the opening as the earned account, per the banking and substance chapters' law), the KYC is central (the know-your-customer of the central sort — the bank due diligence of the KYC kinds: the KYC of the central sort; the account of the KYC kind), the account is earned, not assumed (the diligenced account of the earned sort — the assumed formality of the wrong kinds: the account of the earned sort; the opening of the earned kind), and the honesty formula opens: The Cyprus bank account is earned through the bank's diligence—the KYC satisfied, the substance shown, the documentation provided—not assumed as a formality — the KYC satisfied, the substance shown, the account earned: the account as the diligenced result; whoever assumes the account as a formality assumes away the diligence banks now require, and the account is earned through the diligence, not assumed. The diligence note of the standing echo: The account is earned (the diligenced account of the earned sort — the assumed formality of the wrong kind: the account earned through the bank's diligence, per the banking chapter).
The cross-reference note: The banking, substance and formation chapters carry the neighbours — this chapter carries the bank account; the library earns its account through the diligence.
The Account in Detail: KYC, Substance, Documentation
The account briefing of the banking world: The bank KYC is central (the know-your-customer diligence of the KYC sort — the customer identification of the KYC kinds, per the banking chapter: the KYC of the central sort; the account of the KYC kind), the substance is shown (the genuine business substance of the shown sort — the real activity of the substantive kinds, per the substance chapter: the substance of the shown sort; the account of the substance kind), the documentation is provided (the account documentation of the provided sort — the company and beneficial-owner documents of the documented kinds: the documentation of the provided sort; the account of the documented kind), the beneficial owners are disclosed (the beneficial ownership of the disclosed sort — the UBO information of the disclosed kinds, per the compliance chapter: the beneficial owners of the disclosed sort; the account of the ownership kind), the business rationale reads (the business purpose of the rationale sort — the account need of the explained kinds: the rationale of the read sort; the account of the rationale kind), the account options read (the Cyprus bank of the local sort — the EMI and alternatives of the option kinds, per the banking chapter: the account options of the read sort; the account of the option kind), the timeline reads (the account-opening timeline of the timed sort — the realistic timing of the timed kinds: the timeline of the read sort; the account of the timeline kind), the professional coordination reads (the account opening of the coordinated sort — the CMC and George Zourides of the mandate kinds: the coordination of the professional sort; the account of the coordinated kind), and the account formula closes: satisfy the KYC, show the substance, provide the documentation, explain the rationale. The account formula: KYC satisfied plus substance shown plus documentation provided equals the earned account — the diligence sentence of the bank account.
The diligence note of the standing sort: The account is earned through diligence (the KYC and substance of the diligence sort — the assumed formality of the wrong kind: the account earned through the bank's diligence, per the banking chapter).
Practice Lines: Opening the Account Right
The practice briefing of the applicant world: The KYC is satisfied (the know-your-customer diligence of the KYC sort — the identification of the satisfied kind), the substance is shown (the genuine business of the shown sort — the activity of the substantive kind), the documentation is provided (the account documentation of the provided sort — the documents of the provided kind), the beneficial owners are disclosed (the beneficial ownership of the disclosed sort — the UBO of the disclosed kind), the rationale is explained (the business purpose of the rationale sort — the account need of the explained kind), the timeline is realistic (the account-opening timeline of the timed sort — the timing of the realistic kind), and the practice formula closes: satisfy the KYC, show the substance, provide the documentation, explain the rationale. The chapter's memory line: The Cyprus bank account is earned through the bank's diligence—the KYC satisfied, the substance shown, the documentation provided, the beneficial owners disclosed; those who meet the diligence earn the account, while assumers of a formality assume away the diligence banks now require.
The closing classification: Opening a bank account in Cyprus is earned through the bank's diligence—the KYC satisfied, the substance shown, the documentation and beneficial ownership provided, the rationale explained—not assumed as a formality. The CMC team coordinates the account opening with George Zourides' accounting lane in every relevant mandate — the account is earned through the diligence banks now require, not assumed.
Case Study: The Account Earned Through the Diligence
The earned-through-diligence story: an applicant earned the Cyprus bank account by meeting the bank's diligence rather than assuming it was a formality following formation — the chronicle: The KYC was satisfied (the know-your-customer diligence of the KYC sort — "I'd formed my company and assumed the bank account was a formality—open it and move on; the reality was different, the bank's KYC diligence was substantial, and the account had to be earned by satisfying it", per the banking chapter), the substance was shown (the genuine business of the shown sort — "the bank wanted to see genuine business substance—real activity, a real purpose; a shell wouldn't have earned the account, so showing substance was central", per the substance chapter), the documentation was provided (the account documentation of the provided sort — "I provided the documentation the bank required—company documents, beneficial-owner information, the details of the business"), the beneficial owners were disclosed (the beneficial ownership of the disclosed sort — "the beneficial ownership was disclosed—the bank needed to know who ultimately owned and controlled the company", per the compliance chapter), the rationale was explained (the business purpose of the rationale sort — "I explained the business rationale—why the company needed the account, what it would be used for; a clear purpose helped"), the timeline was realistic (the account-opening timeline of the timed sort — "and I planned for a realistic timeline—the diligence takes time, so I didn't expect a same-day account"), and the balance closed earned: satisfied, shown, provided — the account earned through the diligence. The applicant's verdict: "I earned the account by meeting the bank's diligence—KYC, substance, documentation—rather than assuming it was a formality; the ones who assume a formality assume away the diligence banks now require, and the account is earned through the diligence, not assumed."
The lesson of the earned-through-diligence story: The account is earned through the diligence — the KYC satisfied, the substance shown and the documentation provided; and earning it through the diligence versus assuming a formality is the whole discipline.

The bank account chapter branches into the banking library: the banking chapters for the account, the substance chapters for the diligence, the formation-banking chapter for the sequence, the business-account chapter for the diligence detail. The cluster message: The bank account chapter is the opening desk of the banking library — the account earned; the library earns its account through the diligence banks now require.
Afterword: The Account Is Earned Through the Diligence, Not Assumed
The closing thought: The applicant's principle — the account is earned through the diligence, not assumed — reflects a change in banking reality that outdated assumptions miss, and the change matters because bank accounts were once easier to open than they are now. There was a time when opening a corporate bank account was closer to a formality—a company formed, an account opened without much friction; and this older reality persists in assumptions, the expectation that opening an account is straightforward, a routine step that follows formation without much diligence. But banking reality has changed: driven by anti-money-laundering requirements, know-your-customer obligations, and increased regulatory scrutiny, banks now conduct substantial diligence before opening accounts—the KYC checks rigorous, the substance genuinely examined, the documentation demanded, the beneficial ownership scrutinised—so the account is now earned through this diligence rather than opened as a formality, and the applicant who assumes the older easy reality is unprepared for the diligence the current one requires. The earn-the-account discipline meets the bank's diligence rather than assuming ease: the KYC satisfied (the identification and due diligence provided), the substance shown (the genuine business demonstrated), the documentation provided (company documents, beneficial ownership), the rationale explained (the account's purpose)—the account earned by meeting the diligence, with a realistic timeline that accounts for the diligence taking time. And the substance requirement is where the changed reality bites hardest: banks now want to see genuine business substance before opening an account, wary of shells and conduits, so a company without real substance may struggle to earn an account regardless of being properly formed—the substance that matters throughout the library (for tax, for the structure) mattering also for banking, the bank's diligence being one more place where substance is required rather than assumed. This is the library's diligence-banks-require and substance-throughout principles applied to account opening: the same discipline that reads the business-account diligence and sequences formation from banking, here earning the account through the bank's current diligence rather than assuming the older ease. So earn the Cyprus bank account through the bank's diligence—the KYC, the substance, the documentation—rather than assuming it's a formality. Banking was once easier, and the assumption of ease persists—but banks now diligence rigorously, and the account is earned through the diligence, not assumed, so the applicant who prepares for the diligence (the substance shown, the documentation ready, the timeline realistic) earns the account, while the one who assumes the older formality meets the current diligence unprepared, the account that formation once nearly guaranteed now earned only by satisfying the scrutiny that today's banking reality, not yesterday's, requires.
