Infrastructure and Transport

Cyprus has two international airports – Larnaca (LCA) and Paphos (PFO) – with direct connections to Germany (Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Stuttgart) via Lufthansa, Wizz Air, Ryanair and Cyprus Airways. Flight time is approx. 3.5 hours. There is no rail network on the island; transport relies on a well-developed motorway system (left-hand traffic). Larnaca–Limassol: 45 min, Larnaca–Nicosia: 40 min, Larnaca–Paphos: 1.5 hrs. A car is practically essential – vehicle costs are significantly lower than in Germany (no MOT costs, cheaper insurance, lower taxes).

Cost of Living in Detail

Monthly costs for a family of four in Larnaca are approx. EUR 2,500–3,500 (excluding rent). Rent for a 3-bedroom flat: EUR 700–1,200. A house with pool in a good area: EUR 1,200–2,500. Supermarket prices are similar to Germany; local fruit and vegetables from the market are cheaper. Electricity is more expensive than in Germany (approx. EUR 0.25/kWh), especially in summer with air conditioning. Internet (fibre, 100 Mbit): approx. EUR 35–50/month. Restaurants: EUR 12–20 per main course.

Safety and Rule of Law

Cyprus is one of the safest countries in the EU. The crime rate is among the lowest in Europe – violent crime is extremely rare. The legal system is based on British Common Law and is internationally recognised. Property rights are strictly protected, and the judiciary is transparent and independent.

German Community

An estimated 5,000–8,000 German-speaking residents. Regular Stammtisch meetings in Larnaca, Limassol and Paphos. German products available at Lidl, Alphamega and online.
